WinterCity opening event temporarily re-routes traffic

Running from January 28 to February 10, WinterCity presented by American
Express celebrates the season with events citywide. Recognized as the world's
hottest pyrotechnics ensemble, France's Groupe F launches the event with a
unique winter composition of sound, flame and explosives exclusively for
Toronto's curved City Hall towers. The pyrotechnic display will temporarily
re-route traffic.

Please note the following road closures (all from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Friday
and Saturday, January 28 and 29):
  • Bay Street: Dundas Street West to Queen Street West
  • James Street: Albert Street to Queen Street West
  • Albert Street: James Street to Bay Street
  • Hagerman Street: Bay Street to Elizabeth Street

Groupe F is globally known as the experts behind the closing ceremonies of the
1992 Barcelona Olympics, the Millennium Eve fireworks at the Eiffel Tower and
the recent Athens Olympic Games opening and closing ceremonies. The troupe
produces fairy-like visions and shows distinguished by the brilliant blending
of improbable hues, thumping musical rhythms, dramatic street theatre and
unsurpassed creative design. An international collaboration and world premiere,
The Alchemist presented by Scotiabank blends the enchantment of European
artistry with the talents of Canadian performers and technicians. Groupe F
makes their Toronto debut at WinterCity in Nathan Phillips Square on January 28
and 29. Shows begin at 7 p.m. on both days.

The second annual WinterCity presented by American Express Foundation is a
14-day citywide celebration of Toronto's culture, creativity, cuisine and
diversity of spirit. Running from January 28 - February 10, this festival dares
audiences to forget the weather and join the party in the world's coolest city.
With stellar free indoor and outdoor programming, the popular prix fixe
restaurant promotion, plus tons of winter events and discounts at Toronto's
attractions, WinterCity provides the perfect opportunity for tourists and
locals to sample the city's vibrant arts scene.
