Toronto Fire responds to tragic fire on Wellesley Street East

At about 5:45 a.m. this morning, Toronto Fire Services responded to a call from 85 Wellesley St. E. When fire crews reached the floor with the fire they called in a second alarm. Fire fighters removed a male victim from the second floor apartment with no vital signs. The victim was transported to hospital by Toronto Emergency Medical Services. The victim’s identity has not been confirmed.

Upon inspection, it was determined that there was no smoke alarm in the apartment. The Ontario Office of the Fire Marshall has been called in to investigate.

The Toronto Fire Service is a strong proponent of residential sprinkler systems, which may have saved a life in this fire had they been installed. Residential sprinklers in conjunction with working smoke alarms are your best chance of escaping a residential fire alive.
