Special Gala to Celebrate Toronto’s Architecture and Urban Design Awards
Mayor David Miller and AGO director/CEO Matthew Teitelbaum, will host the City
of Toronto’s inaugural Architecture and Urban Design Awards Gala at the Art
Gallery of Ontario on Monday, May 16. The theme of the 2005 Gala is
“Transformation” of the city, with good architecture and urban design, at a
Toronto landmark which itself is undergoing a major transformation. The
biennial Architecture and Urban Design Awards (AUDA), the fourth since
amalgamation, recognize and celebrate the contributions that architects,
landscape architects, artists, urban designers, and builders make in creating a
beautiful and vibrant city.

This year’s jury — Toronto architect and University of Toronto professor
Brigitte Shim (Partner with Shim Sutcliffe Architects), Montreal-based
landscape architect Claude Cormier (Claude Cormier Architectes Paysagistes
Inc.) and John Bentley Mays (Architecture Critic – Real Estate at The Globe and
Mail) — selected finalists from over 120 entries in six categories. The
categories reflect a full range of urban scales — from Masters Plans for entire
districts and neighbourhoods, to buildings in context, to small urban spaces
and public realm elements. From the finalists, four Awards of Excellence, one
Special Jury Award and the “Best of Show” will be revealed and presented during
the Gala.

What makes a place special? Is there an authentic Toronto look? Can or should a
city strive for “beauty”? How can we design a more livable city? These are some
of the important urban questions to be explored on Monday. The Gala
Celebration, featuring live entertainment, creative presentations, hors d’
oeuvres and cash bar, will bring together Toronto’s designers, planners, land
developers, builders, urban policy makers and many others committed to making a
city that astonishes and embraces its residents, workers and visitors. The
evening will reflect the diversity of Toronto’s streets, parks and places. In
addition to the entertainment and awards presentations, guests will have
special access to the AGO’s “Massive Change – The Future of Global Design”

Single tickets $50 (taxes included) are available through or by calling
TicketKing at 416-872-1212 or toll-free at 1-800-461-3333.

The AUDA 2005 Gala is part of Toronto’s Festival of Architecture and Design,
which continues until May 31. For more information on many design-related
