Toronto to host major international conference of urban leaders

The City of Toronto has won a bid to host the 2006 meeting of the Board of
Directors of the World Association of Major Metropolises. This meeting,
scheduled for June 12-16 of next year, will draw mayors, councillors and
municipal policy makers from major urban centres around the world. It will
raise Toronto’s international profile, and secure this city’s position at the
forefront of urban development.

At the conference, urban leaders will participate in a policy forum with the
theme, "Creativity and competitiveness of cities." They will also discuss
strategies for sustainable urban growth.

"Toronto is coming into its own as a world leader in both sustainable urban
development, and in nurturing a creative culture," said Mayor David Miller.
"This event will be an important opportunity to exchange city-building ideas
with other great cities like London, Berlin, and Buenos Aires."

The City of Toronto has also been selected to co-chair (with Paris) a
three-year research commission on eco-regions and sustainable urban
development. Toronto has demonstrated a strong commitment to sustainable
development through the work of the City’s Roundtable on the Environment,
leadership in Great Lakes clean-up initiatives, and many other urban
sustainability projects.
