The Ontario Tourism Marketing Partnership Corporation, an agency of the Ontario
Ministry of Tourism, has awarded Toronto Special Events the Silver Award for
Best Tourism Marketing Campaign for Cavalcade of Lights, Toronto's city-wide
holiday celebration. The award celebrates marketing excellence and innovation
in the Ontario Tourism Industry and was presented at the first Ontario Tourism
Marketing Summit held Wednesday, October 19, 2005 in Niagara Falls, Ontario.
Cavalcade of Lights at Nathan Phillips Square has an impressive 38-year history
in Toronto. The event was created in 1967 as a one-night celebration to
showcase Toronto's newly constructed City Hall and Nathan Phillips Square.
In 2003, Toronto Special Events developed a five-year strategic plan to
reposition Cavalcade of Lights as a month-long, city-wide celebration with the
potential to motivate travel and generate significant economic impact for the
local economy. The plan also addressed the City of Toronto's Council priority
of making Toronto a clean and beautiful city.
Over the past three years, the Toronto Special Events team has successfully
transitioned Cavalcade of Lights from a one-night skating show to a month-long
city-wide campaign, featuring four Saturday night spectacle and firework shows
at Nathan Phillips Square, a series of magnificent energy efficient LED
lighting displays in neighbourhoods across the city, neighbourhood bus tours,
and tourism packages with local hotels. Attendance figures for Cavalcade of
Lights have steadily grown from an audience of 20,000 in 1999 to over 600,000
For Cavalcade of Lights 2005, 14 of Toronto's famous neighbourhoods will
feature new energy-efficient LED lighting displays illuminated from Saturday,
November 19 throughout the holiday season. Toronto City Hall's Nathan Phillips
Square will feature a breathtaking display of 100,000 lights, the City's
magnificent Christmas tree and spectacular fireworks every Saturday night from
November 26 to December 17.
