Roundtable on Children, Youth and Education

The inaugural meeting of the Mayor's Roundtable on Children, Youth and
Education takes place this evening in the City of Toronto Council Chamber. The
Roundtable, to be chaired by Toronto's Child and Youth Advocate, Councillor
Olivia Chow, is a unique intergovernmental initiative to address the critical
issues facing children and youth in our community. The membership, composed of
27 government and community members, includes representatives from the City,
the Province, Government of Canada, school boards, private sector and community
organizations.

"I am very proud of the willingness of our community and government leaders to
come and work together in serving the best interests of our young people," said
Mayor David Miller. "Together we can chart a course for the future that will
meet the many diverse and complex needs of children and youth."

"Our children and young people need strategies that are integrated,
comprehensive and responsive," said Councillor Chow. "This means putting their
needs and interests at the forefront of decision-making so that families can
easily access community resources including early childhood education programs
such as child care, kindergarten and family resource programs as well as before
and after school care and youth organizations."

The Roundtable's chief mandate involves the development of an integrated
children's services plan and a Toronto youth strategy. The Roundtable's
membership includes:
-The Honourable Maria Minna, Chair Social Policy Committee, National Liberal
Caucus
-The Honourable Marie Bountrogianni, Minister of Children and Youth Services,
Province of Ontario
-Councillors Olivia Chow, Pam McConnell, Janet Davis, Shelley Carroll
-Oliver Carroll, Chair, Toronto Catholic District School Board
-Sheila Ward, Chair, Toronto District School Board
-Frances Lankin, President of the United Way
-Charles Pascal, Atkinson Charitable Foundation
-Kim Warburton, Vice-President, Bell Canada

The work of the Roundtable will be managed by two working groups: Councillor
Janet Davis will chair the working group developing the integrated children's
services plan and Councillor Shelley Carroll will chair the working group
developing the strategy for youth. The Roundtable will complete this phase of
its work and forward the integrated children's services plan and the youth
strategy to Toronto City Council and the federal and provincial governments in
October 2005.
