Mayor Miller announces affordable housing summit to be held in February
Mayor David Miller has announced that he will chair a summit on affordable
housing at the end of February. The meeting will bring together all levels of
government and community members in an effort to identify solutions and an
action plan.

"We must move forward and start solving the affordable housing crisis. We must
redouble our efforts to assist the many families and individuals who need an
affordable place to live in our city," said Mayor Miller.

The half-day affordable housing summit will be held on February 26, 2004 at
Toronto City Hall.

Representatives of the federal and provincial governments, members of the
non-profit, co-operative and private housing sectors, community and business
leaders, and affordable housing champions will be invited to attend.

Mayor Miller is asking that participants bring their ideas, energy and
commitment to improving housing conditions in Toronto. "Now is the time to
develop the necessary housing partnerships to make housing happen," said Mayor

Key objectives of the meeting will be:

· Speed up the creation of new affordable housing to meet the diverse needs of
the City
· Maximize the opportunity to invest current and future federal and provincial
program funding
· Strengthen the City's support for new affordable housing actions
· Encourage all participants to make tangible commitments of support
· Establish targets and timelines for action

"Creating new affordable housing is key to reducing homelessness and poverty in
our city. We need swift action on the real housing issues facing Toronto," said
Mayor Miller.
