Mayor David Miller: Cities need help now

Toronto Mayor David Miller issued the following statement in response to Prime
Minister Paul Martin's announcement concerning the new deal for cities:

"The announcement by the Prime Minister that cities will get a share of the
federal fuel excise tax is an important step toward the new deal," said Mayor
Miller. "But it is vital that Canada's large cities have a solution to address
their public transit and infrastructure problems now.

"It is also encouraging that the Federal Government appears to be offering
municipalities a seat at the table when the urban agenda is being discussed,"
Mayor Miller continued. "Including cities from the start will allow all three
orders of government to use their resources more effectively, and ensure that
cities get the programs and services they need, when and where they need them
most."
