Toronto Budget Chair Soknacki responds to provincial funding announcement

Budget Chair David Soknacki has responded to an announcement made at Queen's
Park this morning on funding for the City of Toronto.

"We are pleased to reach an agreement with the province on $90 million in
additional transit funding," said Councillor Soknacki. "This funding, over and
above the commitments made by the three orders of government yesterday, will
allow us to address our budget challenges at the City."

Councillor Soknacki noted that ongoing talks about a "new deal" will provide
additional funding from a share of the provincial gas tax, over and above
today's announcement. Soknacki said, "Mayor Miller and Premier McGuinty have
met in recent days, and have had discussions about the new deal as well as the
City's immediate budget challenges. Everyone understands that important work
lies ahead, that we need to build in sustainable, long-term funding sources in
order for the city to thrive."

The City's Budget Advisory Committee resumes meeting on Friday, April 2, 2004.
