Waste Advisory Group to announce findings

The New and Emerging Technologies, Policies & Practices Advisory Group,
comprised of citizens and experts, was established in 2003. They have Council's
authority to provide advice on the new and emerging technologies, policies and
practices required to manage and process Toronto's residual solid waste. It is
concluding its two-year term and will release its final report dealing with the
following three key strategic issues:

1. Whether 100 per cent diversion from landfill is an achievable objective;

2. Whether the current 60 per cent - 40 per cent split between traditional
source reduction, reuse, recycling and composting on the one hand and the
introduction of new and emerging technologies, policies and practices on the
other hand is a reasonable approach or requires modification;

3. Identify the next steps regarding the implementation of new and emerging
technologies, policies and practices that the City should take in order to
achieve its diversion objectives.
