Mayor Miller to meet with Iranian Community in aftermath of Earthquake Mayor calls on residents to donate to relief effort

Toronto Mayor David Miller will meet next week with members of the Iranian
community to discuss the impact of the devastating earthquake in Iran's Kerman
province on December 26 and consider how best to further assist the relief
effort.

Mayor Miller stated, "The people of Toronto are compassionate, and I encourage
everyone to contribute what they can to the relief effort." While greeting the
public at the New Year's Levee today the Mayor said, "While we reflect on the
challenges ahead for the City in the new year, we also keep close to our hearts
those who need the help of our City in times of great need."

Toronto's emergency services have assisted with the collection of blankets and
other supplies. The focus is now on raising the funds needed for relief
efforts in the area. The Toronto Red Cross has set-up a Web site with
up-to-date information on the earthquake, relief efforts and how to make a
donation.

Residents of Toronto wishing to make a financial donation may call the Red
Cross at 1-800-418-1111, contact their local Canadian Red Cross office, or make
a donation online at: www.redcross.ca. The 24-hour toll free line accepts Visa
and MasterCard. Cheques should be made payable to the Canadian Red Cross,
earmarked "Iran Earthquake Relief" and mailed to Canadian Red Cross National
Office, 170 Metcalfe Street, Suite 300, Ottawa, Ontario, K2P 2P2. Any funds not
used for this disaster will be transferred to the International Disaster Relief
Fund for future relief operations. Regrettably, donations of goods are not
accepted due to the challenges of transporting donated items to the area.
