Media advisory - Opening ceremonies launch 14 days of WinterCity
What: Revellers can soak up the fiery energy of Toronto's cosmopolitan vibe and
get outside to help launch this city's newest tradition of urban winter
exuberance tonight at the WinterCity Opening Celebration presented by the
Government of Canada. This incredible night will set the stage for 14 days of
big city excitement with a sample of the kind of spectacular entertainment that
will be taking over Toronto.

Here's what you'll see:

7 p.m. Mayor David Miller
Mayor Miller will greet the audience and mark the official launch of WinterCity

Zero Gravity Circus
Zero Gravity Circus provides a choreographed performance against the
architectural backdrop of Toronto's City Hall towers. This beat-heavy show
intertwines an extreme bungee performer, trampoline artists and fire dancers.

(35 minutes)
Le Concert de Feu by France's Les Commandos Percu
France's Les Commandos Percu slices through the cold with the sound of beating
drums and the drama of fireworks blazing across the winter sky. This North
American premiere features five percussionists, who take to the stage as the
dialogue between fire and drum begins. Every thunderous vibration from the
drums illuminates the stage with precisely timed showers of light.

Skating Party with Downstroke
The evening wraps up with a two-hour skating party on the ice rink with live
music provided by Toronto-based Downstroke.

When: Tonight from 7 to 10 p.m., Friday, January 30

Where: Nathan Phillips Square, 100 Queen St. W.

Why: Dare to forget the weather at the party hosted by the world's coolest
winter city. Toronto's newest winter festival, WinterCity, built on the
foundation of the long-running WinterFest, creates a new tradition of winter
revellry. Running from January 30 to February 12, this 14-day celebration gives
center stage to the city's renowned culture, creativity and cuisine. With
stellar free indoor and outdoor programming, the hugely popular prix fixe
restaurant promotion, Winterlicious, presented by American Express plus tons of
winter programming and discounts at Toronto's attractions, WinterCity provides
the perfect opportunity to sample the lush culture and intriguing diversity
Toronto has to offer.
