Fort York Armoury to remain open as temporary shelter for one more week

Mayor David Miller reports that the Department of National Defence has agreed
to the City's request to keep Fort York Armoury open as a temporary emergency
shelter and referral centre for one more week, in order to allow additional
time for discussions.

"Minister of Defence David Pratt has said that he understands the challenges
that make it necessary for us to keep the armoury open for now," said Mayor
Miller. "The City has to be able to provide short-term solutions in times of
great need. At the moment, we need to augment the existing permanent shelter
beds available in 66 other City and provincially funded facilities, because
those shelters are at full capacity."

Fort York Armoury is located at 660 Fleet St. W. (at Strachan Avenue) and
provides shelter for up to 100 homeless people.
