Media Advisory: City of Toronto launching its 2004 United Way campaign

The Toronto Public Service will launch its 2004 campaign for the United Way of
Greater Toronto at a lively event on Nathan Phillips Square next week.

Date: Tuesday, September 14

Time: Noon to 2 p.m. ("City Singers" show starts at 12:30 p.m.)

Place: Nathan Phillips Square, Toronto City Hall

Mayor David Miller and Chief Administrative Officer Shirley Hoy are among the
featured speakers, and eight City staff will compete in the "City Singers"
contest. Judges from the Canadian Idol television program will be there to
evaluate the singers and select three winners.

In addition, two finalists in last year's Canadian Idol competition - Toya
Alexis and Gary Beals - will perform songs at the campaign launch. Members of
Toronto Fire Services and Emergency Medical Services will barbecue hamburgers
and hotdogs.

Another highlight will be the announcement of the City's fundraising goal for
2004. The Toronto Public Service raised more than $1 million for the United Way
last year.

The event is open to the general public as well as members of the Toronto
Public Service.
