City of Toronto and Toronto Zoo statement on tragedy at Toronto Zoo

The City of Toronto with the Toronto Zoo issued the following statement concerning the tragedy that took place at the Zoo earlier today involving the choking death of a young child:

The City and the Zoo wish to express their deepest condolences to the family in this terrible tragedy.

Though the Zoo staff, members of the public and Toronto's emergency responders rushed to assist this young child it was, sadly, not enough. The appropriate medical care that could be provided to the child was given as quickly as possible in the circumstances. All of the staff involved in the incident are very concerned for the family and are greatly saddened by the loss of such a young child.

Notwithstanding the tragic outcome, the City and Zoo wish to thank the members of the public and Region of Durham emergency services personnel for attending the scene and trying to assist the child. Durham Region Emergency Medical Services accompanied the child to hospital and continued to provide emergency medical care during transport.
