Statement Mayor David Miller

Toronto Mayor David Miller tonight issued the following statement with respect to the timing of the return to work of City employees:

The City is pleased that Local 79 has accepted the City's offer to allow their members to return to work prior to City Council consideration of the tentative agreements.

The City has stated to both union locals that the City will welcome all staff back as quickly and efficiently as possible as part of the orderly resumption of the City's services.

The City would also welcome the return of Local 416 staff immediately after they have ratified the new contract.

The timing of ratification votes for both union locals must take place quickly to ensure we can get staff and services up and running quickly. The residents and businesses of Toronto deserve a smooth transition back to regular services and we are prepared to work on this with the unions.

A meeting of Council can only take place once the City's workers approve the tentative settlement and a special meeting of Council will be called when that process has been completed.
