Conference solidifies Toronto’s position as global leader for mining finance

The 77th annual Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada's (PDAC) international convention, trade show and investors exchange will be held in Toronto March 1 to 4. Over 15,000 people from more than 100 countries around the world are expected to attend the event, injecting an estimated $24 million into the local economy.

“Toronto is a global leader in mining-finance,” said Mayor David Miller. “This long-standing success is due in large part to our sound and stable financial infrastructure and conferences such as PDAC that bring together business people from around the world to take advantage of that.”

Toronto is the business and financial capital of Canada, and is therefore a key support for the mining industry. The sheer concentration of the banks, investment house and brokerages, as well the major accounting and law firms, offers one-stop shopping within easy reach of the Metro Toronto Convention Centre. The support extends to similarly located geological consulting firms, mining equipment and services companies, and a variety of industry associations.

The city is the headquarters for the TMX Group - the third largest equity exchange group in North America based on market cap. Mining companies represent 37 per cent of the listings on the TSX and the TSX-Venture exchanges and 55 per cent of the total world public company listings. Over the past five years, $45 billion USD has been raised to finance mining companies on the two exchanges. More financing for exploration and mining is raised on the exchanges than anywhere in the world.
