Mayor David Miller to launch City of Toronto’s open data website
Mayor David Miller will officially launch the City of Toronto’s open data website when he kicks off the Toronto Innovation Showcase.

Date: Monday, November 2
Time: 9 a.m.
Location: Council Chamber, City Hall, 100 Queen St. W.

Open data is the philosophy and practice of making information publicly available and accessible, without restrictions, for people to use.

Toronto Innovation Showcase, hosted by the City of Toronto at City Hall, is a free two-day expo for people to network and discuss the questions of how to strengthen democracy, and promote efficiency and effectiveness by making government more transparent, participatory, and collaborative through information and technology. Attendees will hear success stories, share experiences about opportunities and challenges in the public sector using social media, propose suggestions, exchange information on IT and trends, create connections, knowledge, tools and policies that address the increased demand by residents for better public service, transparency, civic engagement and democratic empowerment.

Toronto is Canada's largest city and sixth largest government, and home to a diverse population of about 2.6 million people. It is the economic engine of Canada and one of the greenest and most creative cities in North America. Toronto has won numerous awards for quality, innovation and efficiency in delivering public services. 2009 marks the 175th anniversary of Toronto's incorporation as a city. Toronto's government is dedicated to prosperity, opportunity and liveability for all its residents.
