Ten Toronto youth win Mobile City photo contest

Deputy Mayor Joe Pantalone and Corrado Paina, Executive Director Italian Chamber of Commerce Toronto, announced the winners of Mobile City at an event yesterday evening at Artcore Gallery. Mobile City is an urban photo contest for youth in the twin cities of Toronto and Milan.

“This is an important project, the youth who have taken part offer us, their audience, a glimpse into their world and their perspective, and in doing so make us better understand each other and our city,” said Deputy Mayor Pantalone.

More than 170 Toronto youth submitted over 700 images to the contest. The short list and 10 winning photographers were chosen by a selection panel convened especially for this project and made up of independent photography, art and design professionals. The 10 winners chosen in each city will travel to their twin city to participate in a group exhibit and selections from the winning photographs will be published in a book in the fall of 2008. The winners from Toronto are: Stephen Baik, Susan Bali, Stephen Dray, Kevin Graham, Ivan Kizito, Joni Lui, Joey Pierri, Pablo Pizarro, Julia Sadat, and Sasha Sobrino. The winning photographs are posted at http://www.mobilecityphoto.org.

“The twinning between Toronto and Milan is a partnership of business and culture with the Mobile City we have opened a new chapter: the two cities exchange experiences on social issues for the promotion of equal opportunities and inclusion to all youth,” said Corrado Paina of the Italian Chamber of Commerce Toronto.

The project called for youth 16 to 22 years of age in both cities to share their dreams and insights about urban life through the creation of digital photographs. The resulting photographs, along with a short artist statement about the work, are posted on the Mobile City website at http://www.mobilecityphoto.org.

The Mobile City is a joint initiative of the Italian Chamber of Commerce of Toronto, the City of Toronto, the City of Milan and the Province of Milan.
