City of Toronto Taxi Advisory Committee to Hold First Election

Taxi Industry Unit, Municipal Licensing and Standards - Toronto's taxi industry
will have a new Taxi Advisory Committee later this year. For the first time
ever, it will be an elected body and drivers and owners will have direct input
into its membership.

TAC Election 2000 is scheduled for Tuesday, October 10. Every taxicab
driver/owner who is properly licensed for the year 2000 is eligible to vote.
Industry members will elect candidates in eight positions: four drivers, two
owners, one independent owner and one brokerage.

The kick-off for the election takes place at the Scarborough Civic Centre, 150
Borough Drive, on Wednesday, July 19 starting at 2 p.m. Nominations open for
the eight positions at this time and run until Monday, August 28. Nomination
packages containing election information and nomination forms will be available
at the kick-off.

"In essence, the TAC will provide advice to the City on taxi-related issues,"
explains Richard Much, Manager of Taxi Licensing and Chair of the TAC Election
2000 Committee. "The ultimate goal is to help move the industry toward
self-management."

The Municipal Licensing and Standards Division of Urban Development Services
has worked with taxi industry members to redesign the Taxi Advisory Committee
in accordance with the recommendations from the Task Force to Review the
Taxicab Industry. They were approved by Toronto City Council late in 1998.
