City launches inaugural Architecture and Urban Design Awards

Good urban design and architectural excellence play a key role in maintaining
and enhancing the quality of life in our city. The City of Toronto intends to
increase the public and private recognition of that role by launching the new
City of Toronto Architecture and Urban Design Awards. The Awards will be an
annual event.

"The Toronto Architecture and Urban Design Awards have been created to
encourage and celebrate excellence in the design and building our city. We
are pleased that the creation of these design awards have had such wide spread
community support and are especially appreciative of the support offered by
many prominent private sector sponsors." said Robert Glover, the Director of
Urban Design in Urban Development Services, "The sponsors, along with the City
of Toronto, believe that good design deserves to be promoted, and Toronto has
much to promote."

Building upon the awards programs of the former North York, Etobicoke,
Scarborough and Toronto, the new Awards will recognize and honour excellence in
design throughout the amalgamated city.

The City will accept entries for the Architecture and Urban Design Awards in
four categories: Element or Building; Small Place; Large Place or Streets; and
Theoretical or Demolished Projects. Each category will have an urban and a
suburban sub-category. A jury of distinguished design professionals is being
assembled to adjudicate the awards.

Anyone can nominate a building, structure, streetscape or theoretical project.
Brochures with nomination forms are available at Access Toronto public
information counters in City Hall and each civic centre and public library
branches. Nominators can also obtain the forms by calling 416-392-7615, or by
following the instructions on the City of Toronto Web site at:
http://www.city.toronto.on.ca/auda .

Design Awards, Urban Development Services, City Planning, Reception, 17th

An independent professional jury will review the entries in mid-June. Awards of
Excellence and Honourable Mentions in all categories will be announced at a
City Hall reception on September 12.
