Taxicab Drivers and Owners to Meet Election Candidates
Municipal Licensing and Standards, Taxi Industry Unit --- On September 19,
taxicab drivers and owners will have a chance to meet the candidates for next
month's Taxi Advisory Committee (TAC) elections.

Hosted by the TAC Election 2000 Committee, the "Meet & Greet the Candidates"
evening will take place from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., at the Scarborough Civic Centre,
150 Borough Drive. A sign-up sheet for speakers will be available; each
candidate will have up to five minutes to speak.

On election day, Tuesday, October 10, voters can go to any one of the polling
stations that will be open 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. at Toronto City Hall and all five
civic centres (East York, Etobicoke, North York, Scarborough and York). There
is an Advance Poll at City Hall, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Tuesday, September
26, 2000.

These elections mark the first time that the TAC, one of several City of
Toronto committees, will not only become an elected body, but also
industry-elected. A total of 42 candidates are running in four categories.
All taxicab drivers and owners who are properly licensed for the year 2000 are
eligible to vote in their respective categories:
· taxicab drivers (four positions)
· taxicab owners (2 positions)
· independent taxicab owners (one position) and
· taxicab brokerages (one position --- already proclaimed).
