The City of Toronto is implementing its coordinated traffic management plan for
the Benson and Hedges Symphony of Fire fireworks program at Ontario Place
scheduled for Saturday, July 1 at 10:30 p.m. and followed by events on July 5
Toronto Transportation Services coordinates the plan in conjunction with
Toronto Police Services, Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) and Exhibition and
Ontario Place staff in order to manage the crowds of more than 100,000 expected
to attend this event.
"To enjoy this event to the fullest, taking public transit is the fastest, most
convenient way of getting there," said David Kaufman, General Manager of
Toronto Transportation Services. "If you decide to drive, plan to arrive
early, use authorized parking lots, and above all, remember to drive safely at
The city's traffic management strategy includes:
- Transit first plan -
Selected street and access ramp closures help manage downtown core traffic by
giving road priority to TTC vehicles (In 1999, the Bathurst streetcar completed
a round-trip to the Bloor Street subway station in only one hour compared with
drive time of an hour and 20 minutes to travel just one way).
- F.G. Gardiner Expressway ramp and street closures - (see attached list for
timings and locations).
- RESCU cameras - inform drivers of traffic flow updates on overhead digital
sign messages and provide media with up-to-the minute road condition
- Emergency response plan - Fire, Ambulance and Police Services on duty
within grounds. More than 70 police officers will be stationed at signalized
intersections and strategic points along the Expressway to assist with traffic
flow and pedestrian safety. Ramp closures also ensure emergency vehicles quick
response access. Tow trucks will remove any unlawfully parked vehicles that
police determine to be obstructing traffic.
- Traffic signal timing adjustment - to better suit traffic flow resulting
from increased demand.
