Parks and Recreation - Two players in the Toronto Parks and Recreation
Basketball Summer League will return to school in September with added
financial support thanks to the Harvey and Linda Gellman Scholarship Fund.
Founded in 1989, the Gellman Fund will broaden its award policy to recognize
two senior players who are full time students maintaining at least a B+ average
and who have demonstrated leadership and sportsmanship in League play.
"This is a very generous donation by Harvey and Linda Gellman," said Ken
Jeffers, Operations Support Co-ordinator of Parks and Recreation's South
District. "In the past, the Harvey and Linda Gellman Scholarship Fund has
concentrated on medical needs, supporting people with a disability, and medical
students in the Caribbean. The Fund has helped graduate 11 doctors who are all
practising medicine in Caribbean countries. We are extremely grateful that they
consider the Summer League to be another vehicle worthy of their support."
The Gellmans chose the Summer League because it represents an opportunity to
give something back to the community. "Linda and I, in association with African
Gold products, appreciate that the Parks and Recreation Basketball Summer
League brings youth of diverse cultural and racial backgrounds together to be
team-mates, learning about working together and dispelling myths. We are
offering the scholarships as a motivation; to encourage young people to
participate in the league and to provide tangible evidence that education
produces options for young people."
The scholarships, valued at $500.00 for each student, will be presented on
behalf of Harvey and Linda Gellman by Parks and Recreation at the Final Banquet
of the Basketball Summer League on August 29, 2000 at Harbourfront Community
