City of Toronto Volunteers of The Year Awards - Nominations Open
Mayor Mel Lastman and Members of Toronto City Council will pay tribute to
Toronto's greatest volunteers during National Volunteer Week being celebrated
the week of April 9 to 15, 2000.

The Volunteers of the Year Awards program is jointly sponsored by the City of
Toronto and the Volunteer Centre of Toronto to honour dedicated, caring and
enthusiastic volunteers.

"Volunteers are very special people and are indeed the heartbeat of our City,"
said Mayor Mel Lastman. "Volunteers make our City a more humane and
compassionate place to live, work and play. Our Volunteer Awards program
provides us with the opportunity to praise, publicize, reward and celebrate the
enormous efforts made by the many volunteers who serve our City in so many
different ways."

Who is eligible? Individuals of all ages who provide volunteer services in
Toronto with a minimum of 300 hours of volunteer time. Volunteers in any of
the following 12 categories are eligible:

Students as volunteers
Volunteer initiated community projects
Children/youth service
Long term care/home support services
Education, health services
Immigrant/newcomer services
Environment/newcomer services
