Medical Officer of Health to launch Put Food in the Budget campaign

Dr. David McKeown, Toronto’s Medical Officer of Health, will join with Sudbury City Councillor Janet Gasparini tomorrow to launch a province-wide campaign calling on the Ontario government to introduce a $100 Healthy Food Supplement for all adults on social assistance in the upcoming provincial budget.

Dr. McKeown will report on the cost of nutritious food in Toronto and the health impacts on people who cannot meet their basic food requirements. Councillor Gasparini, who is also chair of the Social Planning Network of Ontario, will outline the benefits of putting money in the hands of people who need it most and who will spend it in their local communities as a vital economic stimulus for Ontario.

The launch of the campaign will be held during the breakfast drop-in at The Stop Community Food Centre. Members of the Stop community will be drafting messages of what a Healthy Food Supplement means to them, “100 words on 100 dollars.”
