Toronto City Council to meet the Council of the Mississaugas of the New Credit First Nation
  
Mayor David Miller will welcome Chief Bryan LaForme and the Council of the Mississaugas of the New Credit (MNC) First Nation to address Toronto City Council regarding the settlement of the land claim known as the “Toronto Purchase” between the Government of Canada and the MNC.

The “Toronto Purchase” claim relates to the Crown's purchase of approximately 250,880 acres (100,000 hectares) of land from the River Credit Mississaugas in 1805. The southern border ran 14 miles (22.5 kilometres) from just east of Ashbridge's Bay to Etobicoke Creek, and then 28 miles (45 kilometres) north at both the eastern and western boundary. The northern boundary was 14 miles/22.5 kilometres across. The Toronto Islands, a peninsula in 1805, were also included in this surrender. Through the 1805 purchase, the Mississaugas surrendered most of what is now Toronto for 10 shillings.

The basis of the claim was that Canada took more land from the MNC in 1805 than it said it would in 1787 and paid only 10 shillings for the lands. The primary objective of the MNC throughout the negotiation was to obtain a financial settlement from the Crown. The MNC did not seek the displacement of people from their property, changes in land ownership or the expropriation of property as a settlement of the claim. The claim was filed in 1986, with negotiations commencing in 2003.
