City Council appointments made for Wards 20 and 41 | | | | |
City Council, tonight, appointed two Councillors to fill vacant seats on City Council. Martin Silva was appointed to Ward 20 (Trinity-Spadina) and Paul Ainslie was appointed to Ward 41 (Scarborough-Rouge River). Both seats became vacant late last year when incumbents Olivia Chow and Bas Balkissoon resigned from City Council. Chow was elected in Trinity-Spadina following the recent federal election; Balkissoon won a by-election last fall in the provincial riding of Scarborough-Rouge River.
The appointments follow a process established by City Council whereby eligible candidates indicated an interest in filling the vacancies until the term of Council expires Nov. 30. Community Councils heard deputations on Jan. 17 and recommendations were then sent to Council for consideration this evening.
Fifty-six candidates indicated an interest to fill the vacancies. Originally, 61 candidates registered with Elections and Registry Services, but five withdrew from the process. Each candidate was given an opportunity to address Council and answer questions tonight. The appointments are effective immediately.
