Toronto's decommissioned street name signs available to the public next week
  
The City of Toronto is offering the public an opportunity to buy a piece of Toronto nostalgia. The City will begin selling decommissioned street name signs on April 28.

"Over the past few years, the public has shown great interest in owning a piece of the City's history and we are very pleased to be providing this opportunity," said Councillor Denzil Minnan-Wong (Ward 34 Don Valley East), Chair of the Public Works and Infrastructure Committee.

Signs will be available through an online auction run by Platinum Liquidations. Items will be displayed for 60 days and sold individually with a starting bid price of $30. The City currently has about 1,750 signs in its inventory that can be purchased. It is expected that between 200 and 300 signs will be added annually.

In 2007, Toronto City Council adopted a program to replace damaged signs with new signs that are larger and easier to read than the old signs. Every year the City replaces about 1,800 street name signs due to age or damage to the existing sign.

Not all signs that are removed from Toronto's streets will be available for purchase. Signs that are completely unreadable or are in extremely poor condition will be recycled instead of being offered for sale. It is anticipated that new signs will be posted online daily.
