City receives $150,000 donation to fund new initiatives in Danzig
The City of Toronto announced today that it will receive a $150,000 donation over three years from Toronto resident Akanimo Udofia, Group Managing Director/CEO of Desicon Group, to support a variety of resident-developed initiatives within the Danzig community.

Staff members from the City’s Social Development, Finance and Administration division and Toronto Community Housing (TCH) have been working together with Danzig residents to help the community recover from a tragic shooting incident this past summer.

Through a series of community meetings facilitated by City and TCH staff, residents identified the need to create a safe space for children in the community, help children and youth reach academic excellence, and to support adult residents seeking to achieve their employment and career goals.

Over the next three years, the generous donation will provide the funding needed to help the residents accomplish their vision. The Scarborough Boys and Girls Club will act as the trustee for the funds and the City will monitor the progress of the activities and continue to provide support as needed.

Udofia is a committed philanthropist. Through Desicon Group, he has funded scholarship programs in the communities in which the company conducts business. Udofia sponsors the Athletics Federation of Nigeria. In 2009, he also sponsored a team of 58 American medical professionals to provide health care in Akwa Ibom, Nigeria and donated vehicles and equipment to the Rivers State Police in Nigeria.

"As a Toronto resident, I was very troubled by the situation at the Danzig Community. As a philanthropist, I look forward to supporting the programs and initiatives created by the residents. I am honoured to be able to help them shape their own destiny."
-Akanimo Udofia, Group Managing Director/CEO of Desicon Group

"Mr. Udofia's gift will help the residents of the Danzig community to recover from adversity and to find new social and economic opportunities. We are grateful for Mr. Udofia's generosity and leadership, and for raising the community's spirits during a challenging time."
-Councillor Michael Thompson (Ward 37, Scarborough Centre) Chair of Toronto's Economic Development Committee

“Mr Udofia's contribution is greatly appreciated. The residents of the Danzig community now have an unexpected opportunity to take advantage of. The new local programs will help build a stronger and safer community."
-Councillor Ron Moeser, (Ward 44, Scarborough East)

"I would like to thank Mr. Udofia for his generous donation. This support will fund programs to help the young people in Danzig access educational opportunities and pursue their dreams. By working with community partners in Morningside Coronation and right across the city, we can work together to create healthy, vibrant communities."
- Gene Jones, President and CEO, Toronto Community Housing

"Receiving the grant will be very beneficial to the community. This grant will open doors to valuable opportunities for residents and help strengthen and support the vision of the community's leaders. We are very pleased and grateful to Mr. Udofia for his donation to our community."
- Lynette Gittens, Tenant Representative
