Come celebrate: 2011 Green Toronto Awards winners to be announced April 15
The City of Toronto and Green Living Enterprises invite Toronto residents to attend the 2011 Green Toronto Awards at the Direct Energy Centre on April 15. The City's environmental awards of excellence recognize the individuals, organizations and companies helping to lead the way to a cleaner, greener Toronto.

Ten winners will be announced at the seventh annual Green Toronto Awards ceremony on Friday, April 15 at 7 p.m. on the Main Stage at the Green Living Show, Direct Energy Centre, Exhibition Place. Entry to the Green Toronto Awards is free to the public. Singing sensation Alyssa Reid will perform.

Each winner will receive an award and $5,000 to further their work on the environment or to donate to an environmental charity of their choice, courtesy of the award sponsors. New award categories this year are Green Home and Green Business.

2011 Green Toronto Award finalists by category:

Green Business (new award): Green Circle Salons; LoyaltyOne; Woodbine Entertainment Group. The Green Business Award recognizes businesses for excellence in green practices, strategies and products. Award sponsor: Capital One

Green Home (new award): Anthony Ketchum; John Tabone; Lynn Brandy. The Green Home Award recognizes Toronto residents for leadership in greening their homes. Award sponsor: Direct Energy

Community Project: Afri-Can FoodBasket; Auriel Haynes, Malvern Action for Neighbourhood Change; The Green Awakening Network, Toronto United Church Council. The Community Project Award recognizes individuals, community groups and non-profit organizations for their leadership in projects that green our city. Award sponsor: Loblaw Companies Limited

Local Food: Wally Seccombe, Everdale Environmental Learning Centre; The Healthy Butcher; Toronto Beekeepers Co-operative. The Local Food Award recognizes efforts to increase local food production and the food security of individuals, neighbourhoods and communities across Toronto. Award sponsor: ING Direct

Environmental Awareness: A Greener Toronto TV Series; Toronto Vegetarian Association; TREC Education. The Environmental Awareness Award recognizes leadership in helping people to understand the interconnectedness of the natural and mad-made worlds. Award sponsor: Toronto Hydro

Energy Conservation: Nitta Gelatin Canada Inc.; Planet Traveler; Social Housing Services Corp, GLOBE Inc. The Energy Conservation Award recognizes leadership in energy conservation and efficiency, and initiatives which expand the use of renewable energy and alternate fuels. Green Design: architectsAlliance; Leon's Furniture Ltd., Leon's at the Roundhouse; Modrobes Inc. The Green Design Award recognizes leadership in implemented projects in areas such as industrial/product design, infrastructure design and architecture. Award sponsor: Enbridge Gas Distribution

Leadership: Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment, CivicAction, Greening Greater Toronto; Not Far from the Tree. The Leadership Award recognizes an individual, organization or company for helping to transform our environment and delivering results beyond the norm. Award sponsor: Toronto Community Foundation

Water Efficiency: Citizens for a Safe Environment for Toronto Foundation Inc. and Schollen & Company Inc.; Kraft Canada Inc., East York Bakery; Sustainability Team, Kraft Lakeshore Bakery. The Water Efficiency Award recognizes leadership in sustainably managing our water resources, reducing water use, and promoting water conservation. Award sponsor: Toronto Water

Youth Leadership: Dovercourt Junior Public School; Fariha Raham; Youth Mentors, Greenest City. The Youth Leadership Award recognizes the leadership of young people (18 years and under) in projects which create a cleaner, greener Toronto. Award sponsor: TD Friends of the Environment
