City of Toronto and the Tamil community to celebrate Pongal festival

The City of Toronto's Parks, Forestry and Recreation's Access and Diversity Unit's Sharing Culture initiative, in partnership with Tamil Heritage Month Coordinating Committee for 2011, invite media and the general public to attend an evening of Pongal festival performances and the opportunity to "mix and mingle" with some prominent members of the Tamil community.

Date: Thursday, January 27
Time: 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. (remarks at 7 p.m.)
Location: Rotunda, Toronto City Hall, 100 Queen St. W.

This inaugural Sharing Culture event will provide an opportunity for community-based organizations that run recreational activities and cultural festivals to share these art forms with the broader Toronto community.

The Pongal festival celebrates the importance of the natural world for the Tamil community in January. Toronto Parks, Forestry and Recreation, in partnership with Tamil community-based organizations, is taking this opportunity to introduce Torontonians to the significance of the harvest festival and its importance to residents of Tamil heritage.
