A mural was unveiled Saturday by Councillor Maria Augimeri, representatives
from Toronto Culture, Tony Genco, President and CEO of Downsview Park, Maureen
Dorey-Lukie, Chair of the Downsview Park Arts Alliance and the youth artists
and mentors who created the mural.
Through an innovative Toronto Culture employment opportunity, the five youth
have spent every Saturday since August challenging their visual arts skills to
design and create the outdoor mural in Downsview Park.
“The Downsview Mural Project presents some of the best values in our community:
diversity, co-operation and creativity. It reminds us that we can create a
community for everyone, where needs are met and no one is left behind,” said
Councillor Augimeri. “With projects like this taking place across the city I
feel that we are moving closer to that ideal community.”
The mural is a representation of the many types of cultural events that take
place at Downsview Park. It incorporates a depiction of programming that the
Downsview Park Arts Alliance offers, as well as the music, theatre and art
events that take place across the city.
The project is a collaboration of the City of Toronto Culture Division,
Downsview Park and Downsview Park Arts Alliance, and is a Neighbourhood Action
initiative within the Jane-Finch community. City Council created the Mayor’s
Advisory Panel on Community Safety last year to guide the City in preventing
violence and building safe communities. The panel has been working in
partnership with the public, private and community-based sectors.
Tony Genco, President and CEO, Downsview Park said “the Downsview Park mural
project is a tangible expression of the five core values - beauty, play,
sustainability, stewardship and legacy - that are guiding the development of
Downsview Park today. This collaboration with the City of Toronto further
exemplifies the spirit of collaboration between communities and various levels
of government which will serve to enrich neighbourhoods and communities across
