Day. Members of the media and public are invited to join the celebration.
Councillor Sherene Shaw, the City's Diversity Advocate, will make the official
proclamation. Dennis Lee, the City of Toronto's Poet Laureate and nominee for
the prestigious Hans Christian Anderson Award, will host The Poetry Through
Cultures readings.

Date: Thursday, March 21

Time: 6 to 9 p.m.

Location: Program - Toronto City Hall Council Chamber
Reception - Members Lounge

Participating in the program are poets George Elliot Clarke, Afua Cooper, Stan
Rogal, Paul Savoie and Gianna Patriarca. The winners of the Poetic Licence
Contest for Canadian Youth will also be presented.

Canada has supported the United Nations General Assembly resolution since 1966
designating March 21 as the International Day for the Elimination of Racial
Discrimination to honour the memory of victims who were wounded and killed by
police in Sharpeville, South Africa on March 21, 1960 after a peaceful,
anti-apartheid demonstration.

This event is sponsored by the League of Canadian Poets, the City of Toronto's
Culture Division, Diversity Management and Community Engagement of the CAO's
Office, the Department of Canadian Heritage, the Canada Council for the Arts,
and the Canadian Commission for UNESCO.
