Media Advisory: City promotes safe cycling

The media is invited to attend the City of Toronto's launch of the Sidewalks
are for Pedestrians campaign, promoting safe and responsible cycling in the
city.

Date: Monday, June 17
Time: Noon
Location: Corner of College and McCaul Streets in front of the
Toronto District School
Board, 155 College St.
(In case of inclement weather, the launch will take place indoors.)

Councillor Jane Pitfield (Ward 26 Don Valley West), Councillor Olivia Chow
(Ward 20 Trinity-Spadina) and Inspector Wally McCourt, Toronto Police Traffic
Services, will be on hand for this event.

The City bylaw states that bicycles with wheels larger than 61cm (24 inches)
are prohibited from riding on city sidewalks. The intent of the bylaw is to
allow young children to cycle on the sidewalk while they are learning to ride,
and to keep adult cyclists on the street so that sidewalks are safer for
pedestrians.

The City of Toronto's campaign complements the recently launched Toronto Police
Services campaign, Cycle Right. Both campaigns aim to raise awareness of the
need for safe cycling.
