Mayor to Martin: "Do the right thing"

Mayor Mel Lastman will travel to Ottawa today to meet with Federal Finance
Minister Paul Martin and challenge him to "do the right thing" for the City of
Toronto.

The Mayor said he will be pushing Martin for:
  • Speedy access to federal infrastructure money already earmarked for Toronto for projects like the Opera House
  • A commitment from the Finance Minister for $100 million in in-year funding for the Toronto Transit Commission.

"We've been working hard on these two issues and I believe that with Mr.
Martin's help, we can make them happen," Lastman said.

The meeting between Martin, Lastman and the mayors of other major Canadian
cities will also focus on the need for:
  • Long-term, sustainable transit funding for the country's major urban centres.
  • A fair allotment of funds from the new federal infrastructure program for Canada's large cities

"Large cities need stronger support from the Federal Government," Lastman said.
"I hope today is the beginning of a new relationship."
