Council to fill Ward 30 vacancy by appointment
City Council, at the end of day Friday, opted to fill the vacancy left by Jack
Layton in Ward 30 - Toronto-Danforth by appointment. Provincial legislation
gives city councils the option of holding a by-election or appointing an
individual to fill a vacant council seat.

The first step of the appointment process will take place at Toronto East York
Community Council on February 20 at 2 p.m. The community council will then vote
to recommend an appointee. City Council will make an appointment at a special
meeting of Council on March 26 at 5 p.m. Interested individuals may be asked to
address the Toronto East York Community Council, as well as City Council. The
term of appointment ends on November 30, 2003.

Any eligible elector in the city of Toronto who is interested in filling this
vacancy must attend one of two information sessions on February 18 from 2 p.m.
to 4 p.m., or from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in Committee Room 3 at City Hall. They must
also provide proof of name and qualifying address within the city, complete a
Consent of Nominee form and a Declaration of Qualification and submit a resume.
