City kicks off International Literacy Month with a Poetry Challenge

City of Toronto Councillor Maria Augimeri, chair of the City's Language Equity
and Literacy Working Group, will host an event to celebrate International
Literacy Day and launch the Poetry Challenge. This day kicks off International
Adult Learners Week and is part of International Literacy Month, which runs
through September. The City's participation in this month-long program
demonstrates its commitment to eliminate illiteracy in Toronto by 2010.

Date: Monday, September 8

Time: Noon

Location: Toronto City Hall, Members' Lounge, 3rd floor

Joining Councillor Augimeri at this event will be Dennis Lee, the City's Poet
Laureate; Linda Sullivan, a long-time literary tutor and committee member of
the Metro Toronto Movement for Literacy; and Trish McGrath, executive director
of The Word on the Street literacy festival. Local poets, including Debora
Scorsone, a member of Literature for Life, will read from their work.
