20,000 Reads Under the Sea Toronto Public Library launches 2003 TD Summer Reading Club

What do you get when you take a good idea, lots of kids, a summer vacation and
a little hard work? A Reading Club with over 50,000 kids!

In its seventh year, the TD Summer Reading Club theme for this year is "20,000
Reads Under the Sea."

"When we launched this program in 1997, we reached 4,000 Toronto kids," says
Toronto Public Library's City Librarian Josephine Bryant. "Three years later,
with the financial assistance of TD Bank Financial Group, we were able to
expand the program across Ontario."

"The American and Canadian Library Associations' Conference is the perfect
opportunity to celebrate this important program. We want to be able to
demonstrate the results of working with a willing private sector partner to
bring positive programming to our city and province," Bryant notes.

The TD Summer Reading Club will run in all of Toronto Public Library's 98
branches throughout July and August. The TD Summer Reading Club is a free
program for children ages 5 through 13 who are able to read on their own.
Children may register at any branch of the Toronto Public Library or go online
to www.tpl.toronto.on.ca for more information.
