Opening Celebration to set the tone for 14-day festival

Toronto Special Events -- Revellers can soak up the fiery energy of Toronto's
cosmopolitan vibe and get outside to help launch this city's newest tradition
of urban winter exuberance with the WinterCity Opening Celebration presented by
the Government of Canada on Friday, January 30 at 7 p.m.. This incredible night
will set the stage for 14 days of big city excitement with a sample of the kind
of spectacular entertainment that will be taking over Toronto.

France's Les Commandos Perçu slices through the cold with the explosive sounds
of beating drums and the drama of fireworks blazing a tapestry of shimmering
gold, scarlet and sapphire flames across the winter sky. This North American
premiere will electrify the senses of the audience with a furious and steady
beat. Five percussionists take to the stage as the dialogue between fire and
drum begins. Every thunderous vibration from the giant drums illuminates the
stage with precisely timed showers of light building to a volcanic finale. This
provocative blend of explosive imagination, drama and creativity is truly a
musical fireworks show like nothing seen in Toronto before.

Zero Gravity Circus will offer up a choreographed performance against the
architectural backdrop of Toronto's City Hall towers. This beat heavy show
intertwines an extreme bungee performer, trampoline artists and aerial dancers
flying through the air with strong fire elements and bold music. Zero Gravity
Circus' fantastical take on the circus tradition will create a spellbinding and
unforgettable experience for each member of the audience.

Dare to forget the weather at the party hosted by the world's coolest winter
city. Toronto's newest winter festival, WinterCity, built on the foundation of
the long-running WinterFest, creates a new tradition of winter revellry.
Running from January 30 - February 12, 2004, this 14-day celebration gives
center stage to the city's renowned culture, creativity and cuisine. With
stellar free indoor and outdoor programming, the hugely popular prix fixe
restaurant promotion Winterlicious presented by American Express plus tons of
winter programming and discounts at Toronto's attractions, WinterCity provides
the perfect opportunity to sample the lush culture and intriguing diversity
Toronto has to offer.
