Media Advisory: Members of City of Toronto Community Advisory Committee to make deputation to federal standing committee on same-sex marriages

Members of the City of Toronto Community Advisory Committee on Lesbian, Gay,
Bisexual and Transgender Issues will make a deputation to the federal Standing
Committee on Justice and Human Rights on legal recognition of same-sex
marriages.

Date: Friday, April 11
Time: 10:30 a.m.
Place: Delta Chelsea Hotel
Mountbatten Room
33 Gerrard St. W.
(between Yonge and Bay Streets)

Tatum Wilson, the Co-chair of the Community Advisory Committee, and Amelia
Golden, a member of the Community Advisory Committee, will present the
submission.

In December 1999, Toronto City Council recommended establishing five community
advisory committees that focus on aboriginal affairs, disability issues, the
status of women, race and ethnic relations and lesbian, gay, bisexual and
transgender issues. These advisory committees provide a formal mechanism for
City Council to obtain community advice on a variety of issues.

The Standing Committee on Justice and Human Rights is holding extensive
hearings in 11 cities across Canada this month to hear from organizations and
individuals on the Minister of Justice's discussion paper on marriage and the
legal recognition of same-sex unions. The discussion paper is available on-line
at http://canada.justice.gc.ca/en/dept/pub/mar/index.html.
