Council approves motion that allows businesses to stay open this Victoria Day

Toronto City Council today declared this Victoria Day long weekend a special
"Toronto: You Belong Here" event. In doing so, local retailers from across the
city can remain open and benefit from holiday business on Monday, May 19 if
they choose.

"The city of Toronto is the place to be this Victoria Day long weekend," said
Mayor Mel Lastman. "We are rolling out the red carpet for residents and
visitors - not only do we have lots of special events planned, but our
restaurants and retail stores will be open for business. I encourage everyone
to get out and enjoy all we have to offer."

The four-day celebration, which kicks off on Friday, May 16, will culminate
with live music performances and a huge fireworks display on Monday, May 19 at
Ashbridge's Bay Park. The City has many other special events, firework displays
and festivals planned for the holiday weekend - a full list will be available
later this week at http://www.toronto.ca.

Businesses that wish to remain open should seek input from their staff to
ensure they are able to work on the holiday. Staff should not be required to do
so.
