Mayor's Task Force steps up SARS recovery campaign

The Mayor's Toronto: You Belong Here Recovery Task Force is moving quickly to enable the City to manage
the economic impact of the second phase of the SARS outbreak.

At its meeting today, Task Force members reaffirmed the need for the City to
persist in its efforts to engage Torontonians in the renewal of affected areas
of Toronto's economy.

As a result, staff were authorized to continue the comprehensive marketing,
advertising and promotional campaign aimed at mobilizing Torontonians to come
out and join in the life of the city. The Task Force also agreed to plans that
would allow all retail businesses in the City to remain open on Labour Day this
year.

Task Force members expressed the view that it is more important than ever for
Torontonians to shop and dine locally, given the continuing challenges which
the city's tourism and hospitality businesses face.

The Task Force also called on staff to suggest ways to help organizers of
significant community events manage the impact of the second phase of the
outbreak on attendance. Task Force members emphasized the need to expedite
these initiatives.

The Task Force also heard Toronto's Medical Officer of Health, Dr. Sheila
Basrur, report on public health responses to the second phase of the outbreak.
Members expressed full confidence in the ability of Toronto's health care
workers to contain and manage the disease.
