Media Alert: Duguid to Drive Truck Route to Michigan to Tour Carleton Farms Landfill Site

Toronto - City Councillor Brad Duguid, Chair of the City of Toronto's Works
Committee, will be leaving Monday morning to drive the route to Michigan taken
by the Wilson Logistics trucks that ship Toronto's waste to Michigan. A tour of
the Carleton Farms Landfill Site will be undertaken on Tuesday, February 18,
2003.

"It is important to be sensitive to the concerns being expressed by some of the
cities along the route as well as the residents of Michigan," said Councillor
Duguid. "At the same time, Toronto is making huge efforts to divert our waste
from landfill and our plans and success to date should be effectively
communicated to all concerned."

The purpose of Councillor Duguid's trip is to experience the route taken by the
trucks shipping Toronto waste to Michigan and to observe the Carleton Farms
Landfill Site first hand. A variety of private meetings with officials
representing communities that have expressed concern will be scheduled.

"Toronto's waste diversion efforts will reduce the number of tractor-trailers
hauling Toronto waste from 125 per day in 2003 to approximately 54 per day by
2006. This is less than the number of trucks that have been hauling waste to
Michigan since 1998. By 2010, there should be no trucks hauling Toronto waste
on the road at all. All concerned should be aware of the determined effort
being made by Toronto to reduce our waste," said Councillor Duguid.

All media are welcome to accompany Councillor Duguid along the route and/or on
the tour of Carleton Farms. The meetings along the way will be held in private.
However, Councillor Duguid will be available for comment after each of the
meetings. Attached is a preliminary itinerary. The private meetings will be
confirmed by Friday, February 14, 2003. Media interested in participating
should call 416-396-7708 or 416-392-0204.

A media scrum and photo op is scheduled for 8:00 a.m. on Monday, February 17,
2003 at the Scarborough Transfer Station. A truck will be loading
Michigan-bound waste and Councillor Duguid will be available for comment prior
to leaving for Michigan.
