City of Toronto honours community groups to celebrate Children's Services Month

A reception at Toronto City Hall this morning honoured the contributions of 125
community agencies and programs serving young children in Toronto. The event
celebrated Children's Services Month, May 11 (Mothers' Day) to June 15
(Fathers' Day).

Following the reception, Councillor Olivia Chow, Children's Advocate for
Toronto City Council, hosted a celebration in the Council Chamber, which
included a musical performance by ten-year-old Alyssa Nienhuis. Councillor
David Shiner, chair of the Budget Advisory Committee, welcomed the groups and
introduced the keynote address by Annie Kidder, of People for Education.

Councillor Olivia Chow said, "This annual event is our opportunity to honour
many of the programs that provide high-quality service in their communities.
Staff of these programs demonstrate dedication and consistently go the extra
mile in their service to children and their families."

Recipients of the certificates included child care providers, language
programs, music programs, art therapy programs, boys' and girls' clubs,
mentoring programs, sports programs, day camps, counseling programs and
French-language programs.
