Special meeting of Council to appoint Ward 30 Councillor

Date: Wednesday, March 26
Time: 5 p.m.
Place: Council Chamber, Toronto City Hall, 100 Queen Street West

City Council will meet to appoint a Councillor to fill the vacancy in Ward 30
Toronto-Danforth left by former Councillor Jack Layton. Provincial legislation
gives city councils the option of holding a by-election or appointing an
individual to fill a vacant council seat. Council adopted an appointment
process on February 7.

Toronto East York Community Council met on February 20 and heard from
applicants interested in the Council vacancy. On Wednesday, City Council will,
again, consider each of the applicants and vote by ballot to select a
replacement. Each applicant may address Council, as well as be asked questions
by Council.

The votes of each Councillor will become part of the public record and be
reflected in the minutes of the meeting. Voting is not secret. The term of the
appointment concludes November 30, 2003.
