Laura Jones appointed as Councillor for Ward 30 Toronto-Danforth

Laura Jones was appointed Councillor for Ward 30 Toronto-Danforth tonight at a
special meeting of City Council. Jones fills the vacancy left by Jack Layton,
who resigned his seat on February 4. The term of the appointment ends on
November 30, 2003.

Provincial legislation gives city councils the option of holding a by-election
or appointing an individual to fill a vacant council seat. Toronto City Council
adopted an appointment process to fill this vacancy on February 7.

There were 41 individuals interested in the vacancy. The vote at Council
tonight went to four ballots. At the end of the fourth ballot there was a tie
between Jones and Tom Clifford. Under the procedure adopted by Council, the
City Clerk drew lots. Jones was the winner.

Also at Council today, Betty Disero's Ward 17 Davenport seat was declared
vacant. Disero resigned her seat on March 14. Council will decide on the
process to fill this vacancy at its next Council meeting, scheduled for April
14.
