Toronto delegation promotes Toronto in meeting with leading Italian media

Milan - Toronto delegates on a trade and cultural mission to Italy met with
executives and reporters of Mediaset, Italy's largest private television group,
in Milan today. The purpose of the meeting was to promote Toronto as a safe and
exciting place to do business with and to visit.

"We have been warmly received by the people of Milan during our visit. There is
a lot of interest in Italy about doing business in Toronto and visiting it,"
said Mayor Mel Lastman.

Mediaset is one of the world's largest broadcasting companies. It is owned by
Silvio Berlusconi, Prime Minister of Italy.

Mayor Lastman is in Milan this week leading a delegation of more than 50
leaders of the city's private sector, post-secondary schools, cultural
institutions and non-governmental organizations. The goal of the mission is to
pursue economic and cultural opportunities for Toronto in Italy. On Monday,
Mayor Lastman and Mayor Gabriele Albertinti signed an agreement to strengthen
business, trade, cultural and tourism ties between Toronto and Milan.

This week Mayor Lastman and the delegation's activities have included:
· promoting Toronto at a seminar organized and attended by trade associations
and agencies which together represent 300,000 businesses in Italy;
· opening a Toronto trade exhibit in Milan;
· encouraging investment in Toronto at a meeting with the Chamber of Commerce
of Como, an industrial hub north of Milan;
· visiting the headquarters of Pirelli, one of Europe's largest manufacturers,
to brief executives about Toronto's competitive advantages; and
· opening an exhibition to showcase Toronto and Canadian design talent.

On Thursday delegates will promote Toronto as a trade show and convention
centre during a meeting with executives of Fiera Milano Internazionale, one of
the world's largest exhibition organizers. Delegates will also meet with the
head of the Canadian Italian Business Council and the Lawyers Association of
Milan.
