Fire, Police and EMS respond to building collapse|

The following is the joint-release issued by Toronto Fire, Toronto Police and
Toronto Emergency Medical Services last night.
This morning (12-08-03) crews from Toronto Fire Services, Toronto Police
Service and Emergency Medical Services responded to the report of a building
collapse at the former Uptown Theatre. Upon arrival crews quickly discovered
casualties in an adjacent building which housed the Yorkville English Academy.
14 injured occupants were taken to local hospitals with injuries ranging from
minor to one boy who was extricated from the debris with crush injuries to his
lower extremities. At this time one fatality has been confirmed.
Toronto's HUSAR (Heavy Urban Search and Rescue) Team was also dispatched to
this scene. This team is comprised of members from each of Toronto's Emergency
Services and have specialized search and rescue training. The team is also
equipped with all of the tools required to complete extremely hazardous
rescues. The efforts of the Husar team should be noted as they played an
advanced role in the search for victims while ensuring the safety of all first
Fire Police and EMS Staff work in conjunction with other agencies such as The
Ministry of Labour, Technical Safety Standards Authority, City Building
Officials, Ontario Provincial Police and the Mayors Office. United efforts
have ensured an efficient and safe rescue scene.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank the Mayors office the Salvation
Army TFS Box 12, the Manulife Centre, the Bloor Street Dinner, Value Mart,
Pharma Plus and Scaccia Restaurant, for their support of all on scene staff.
The support shown to First Responders by these groups was an example of the
great citizens of Toronto.
