Community Council recommends Laura Jones for Ward 30 vacancy

Toronto East York Community Council today recommended the appointment of Laura
Jones to fill the vacancy left on Council following the resignation by Jack
Layton of his Ward 30 Toronto-Danforth seat on Feb. 4.

Jones indicated she would not seek election in the City's municipal election
this November 10. The City of Toronto received 42 applications from individuals
interested in the appointment.

A special meeting of City Council, to be held March 26 at 5 p.m., will make the
final decision by secret ballot. Council can also hear five-minute deputations
from the 42 applicants interested in the vacant seat. The term of the
appointment ends November 30, 2003.

Under provincial legislation, city councils in Ontario can opt to hold a
by-election or appoint an individual to fill a vacancy. Applicants must be 18
years old, Canadian citizens and reside in the city, or own or rent property in
the city.
